The plant represents SCA’s biggest investment so far in value-adding processes in the company’s sawmill operations.
Providing 24 new jobs, the new plant will produce slightly more than 30 thousand cubic metres - 5 million running metres, of window components in two shifts.
“Through this investment SCA forcefully demonstrates its commitment to hi-tech production and development in the northern-most region of Sweden,” said Mr Eriksson. “An increase of personnel of 20% in a business that normally reduces staff is impressive and very good news in troubled times.”
The plant produces finger-jointed, glulam window components. Specifically selected raw material is planed and finger-jointed to lamella 6m in length, before the lamella are planed again and then glued into finished window components.
“Our ambition is to grow in this market and we have the possibility to increase production capacity in the new plant, which could result in additional personnel needs,” said Anders Nordmark, plant manager at the Munksund Sawmill.
The sawmill is one of Sweden’s largest and produced 370 thousand cubic metres of solid-wood products from pine in 2008. Currently, the sawmill employs 148 personnel including contractors.
